Mamma Mia! That’s Some Good Coffee

Mia’s Coffeehouse

101 15th St NE

Washington, DC 20002

My roommate and I frequently remark that we rarely find ourselves travelling directly east of our apartment in Eastern Market. I am often heading north toward Union Station or H street, west toward the National mall, or south to catch a ballgame at Nats park in Navy Yard. But I almost never explore the neighborhoods east of eastern market, simply because I never have a reason to.

However, today I made an exception, and found myself at Mia’s Coffeehouse on the corner of A and 15th NE. As soon as I walked in, I could tell that Mia’s is a neighborhood establishment. The baristas seemed to recognize most of their customers, and many of the customers knew or recognized each other. As I stepped up to order an iced latte, the barista asked me how my day was going, and I got the vibe that he wasn’t used to seeing new faces at his shop. Unlike many DC staples, Mia’s coffee shop is not what I’d call “trendy.” Instead, it has a much more authentic vibe. And compared to most of the coffee shops I have reviewed before, I had no trouble finding a seat at Mia’s. In fact, I had multiple open tables and chairs to choose from. But while the number of customers was few and far between, the character at Mia’s Coffee Shop was anything but lacking.

My iced latte was delicious, and in addition to coffee and tea, Mia’s offered an extensive menu of pastries, sandwiches, and rice bowls. The walls were decorated with paintings, photographs, and an art installation of origami swans. The featured wall art was curated with a one-page description of the artists and the meaning behind the art.

As I sat at Mia’s coffeehouse and absorbed my surroundings, the first word that came to mind is “charming.” Mia’s is quaint, friendly, and unpretentious. And it’s no coincidence that this coffee shop is located in Capitol Hill, one of the most charming neighborhoods in DC (although I suppose I’m a little biased).

So if you’re looking for a place that offers great tasting coffee, plenty of seating options, and good vibes, you may want to spend an afternoon at Mia’s Coffeehouse. I’m glad I did.
